stolen(for second time)in San Fransisco while on vacation(in Arkansas) It's OK since SF is a sanctuary city and obviously it is legal to steal cars. It used to be a Saturn but they really finished it off this time.

Rust. It was The Year for almost everything to rust out at the same time. My Jeep is an oldie-but-goodie, and I hope to keep it going indefinitely. Much less money than buying something newer (a newer Jeep, probably) and having a huge car payment each month.

Well, it finally happened. After more than one million miles of driving, I hit a deer that ran directly in front of me. It was a nice buck that would have looked good on somebody's wall. His antler punctured my transmission cooler and left me disabled. The buck paid with his life. Don't know what my final bill will be yet.

How is it possible that 18% of poll responders have never had a disabled vehicle? Must be a lot of young folks driving new cars. I am 60 years old, have driven over 1,200,000 miles in my life, and could not begin to count the number of times I have had a disabled vehicle. While I have been involved in about 30 accidents where my vehicle was disabled, and at least a dozen where my vehicle was totaled. Some of the accidents were my fault, but the majority were the fault of another driver. Most fortunately, I have never been involved in an accident where there was serious injury. Probably because I have never been involved in an accident where a tractor-trailer truck was involved.

brake pedal was soft and spongy last fall to winter. I ignored this problem and it got worse to the point where I would pump my brakes a few times and the brakes seemed to hold for a bit. Later it would just release as the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor, and I almost got in to several accidents (very dangerous). After doing some extensive research and trying to fix this problem the cheapest way first by bleeding the brakelines several times, I ended up having to replace the master cylinder, brake booster, disc brake pads and rotors for the front wheels. During this process there was a leak in the brakeline(s) and it seemed to be coming from the brakeline Y-Adapter that regulates the brakelines for the front and rear drum brakes. Anyways it was a nightmare that lasted several months but now most of the problems seems to have been rectified. The brake pedal is still a bit soft but at least the brakes do hold now.

Turns out this topic has been a jinx. Just before the topic was posted my brakes went out ( break line rupture ). Just this week the power steering went out. Had to replace everything. My car is 12 years old with 104,000 miles. I have to keep it for 100,000 more miles to get my money back.

I wasn't stranded totally, but I had a wheel bearing go bad while in Los Angeles. Did I mention I lived in Mississippi at the time? Yeah. It was drivable but I wasn't about to take a chance on the 1,900 mile return trip. So I stuck around a few extra days and rented a car.

Flat tire due to a bolt, with a binder clip wrapped around it o.O, impaled my tread. The bolt went through, the clip only affected the tread.

I had a flat tire on a left turn. I thought I picked up a bunch of nails! Not so. Tire wore unevenly down metal belt leaving broken wire projections on the inside of the tire. Cause: bad alignment caused by bumpy roads and potholes.

battery Although, failing for a while and carrying spare bat and cables. Fails only overnight.
Last real problem is Tracker sometimes no connection when I turn the key. Only did it right after I bought it! (last year) and again this week!
stevejk, comment to you and others: battery blown (vented) and broken internal connection COULD be coincidentally bad batteries, BUT I hope one of those mechanics (or yourself) did an alternator check! Repeated battery failures hint at overcharging by the alternator system. (TOO much voltage)
